Virtual Reality is here

Pic of Ronin wearing the Gear VR

I opened my Christmas present early. In November I got a new job and with it I got a Samsung Galaxy S6 phone that I picked, in part, because of Samsung's Gear VR Virtual Reality headset. This thing is amazing. After trying Smitty's Oculus Rift at the last Frag Weekend I knew I wanted to get any type of VR setup I could and I can't believe how good this set up is for a first generation (sort of) piece of equipment.

The highlights include a photo gallery from all of the world of amazing places; the top of the Eiffel Tower and a view from the Empire State Building are truly amazing but there are hundreds to see and users are adding more all the time.

I haven't played any games yet but a very simple but awesome app is Netflix. You are in a room with what looks to be a 12' projection screen and it plays videos through the app so my queue is there and I can watch everything just with a bigger experience altho the picture quality isn't quite as good. In fairness I have a nice HD projector and my screen is 96" with full surround but for many people this VR Netflix will be quite an upgrade.

They are having a problem with their credit card service for paid content (2 different credit cards failed to work this morning) so I haven't purchased anything yet but I will I am sure. The other problem is it absolutely eats through the battery and generates a lot of heat but those are minor issues.

I also bought a Moga Power A, Power Pro bluetooth game controller specifically to use with the Gear VR but we didn't get it going yet as the current Gear VR setup, using a touchpad on the side of the unit, is easy and intuitive, but I am sure for games it will be great. I will also see if I can use this controller for racing games on my PC too.

I believe that the days of great desktop displays are numbered. Once they get 4k displays going (you can see the pixels in the Gear VR right now) for this there'd be no real reason not to get a VR headset instead of giant desktop display. It certainly will be much more cost effective.

I read a lot of sci fi when I was younger (I still do only not as much, sadly) and so much has some type of simulation, Matrix, Metaverse, Cyberspace that this cool piece of tech is right in line with the predictions. I can't wait to show you at the next Frag Weekend.
After seeing and hearing about the amazing rigs that many people have on these forums; it seems rather silly for me to the specs of my very modest gaming PC. It works and that's good enough for me.

Awesome, I'm waiting for the Consumer Version of the Oculus Rift. But can't wait to play Elite Dangerous with it! :D

Anyways, definitely let us know how it works with games, I'm curious since its possibly a cheaper alternative (assuming you have the phone of course).

Oh, and I like the Christmas sweater. ;) Really completes the 'old man' look. :P (j/k)

'Old Man' look....that's harsh ( and accurate)

Elite Dangerous will be amazing. Last night we did a simulation called Titans of Space. It's a 10 minute tour of the solar system that is the best use of the VR yet. Once they get something playable and not just watching it will be unbelievable.

The more I use it the more I like it.
